About this class

This workshop introduces participants to experimental screen printing through layering via chine-collé. Participants will learn the basic principles of screen printing, including positive and negative space, stencil-making, ink application, registration, and printing on paper.

They will experiment with hand-drawn transparencies, cut-paper stencils, found textures, and photographic imagery to create layered and expressive prints.

The workshop will encourage participants to approach screen printing as a flexible image-making process rather than focusing solely on traditional editioned prints. Through transparent and opaque inks, layering, registration and intentional misregistration, monoprinting, and chine-collé, participants will explore color, texture, repetition, and visual depth.

Instructor: Priyanka Kumar

Priyanka Kumar is an interdisciplinary artist, photographer, printmaker, and educator based in the United States. She holds an MFA in Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design, where she worked as a Teaching Assistant and Graduate Instructor in the Printmaking Department.

Her practice moves between photography, printmaking, papermaking, and artist books, with a particular interest in transforming photographic images through experimental print processes. She works across monoprint, intaglio, photogravure, screen printing, image transfer, cyanotype, and other mixed-media techniques.

Kumar's teaching practice focuses on experimentation, material exploration, and expanding the possibilities of photographic imagery through printmaking. She encourages students to move beyond reproducing photographs and instead explore how images can be transferred, fragmented, layered, altered, and reimagined through different printing processes.

With a background in law, museum studies, photography, and fine art, Kumar brings a research-driven and interdisciplinary approach to teaching. She has experience teaching university and community-based workshops and is particularly interested in creating accessible, hands-on learning environments where participants can develop their own visual language through experimentation.
